The "B" Word

The dreaded "B" word that absolutely everyone hates...
BUDGET.

I am in no way a financial expert, in fact, quite the opposite. I am embarrassed to admit that up until last year I was quite the financial mess. I didn't budget, I didn't track my spending, I made horrible financial decisions and I'm paying for it. Literally.

Jason and I lived together for 4 years before getting married but we didn't have a joint account until after the wedding. We just split the bills and were otherwise responsible for our own spending and let me tell you that was a disaster. I remember reading somewhere that the number one cause of marital trouble is finances, so you know me (a total spaz) I began to worry that if we didn't get our ducks in a row we were doomed.

Last year (2012), we made some financial changes that have really helped get us on track and have made a world of difference in terms of the "B" word.

1. We got a joint checking. Not to say this is the way to do it for all couples, but having a joint checking account makes paying bills a hell of a lot easier! It's also made us both a lot more financially responsible, when you're sharing money you tend to be smarter about what you're buying.

2. We communicate, a lot. I think this is the absolute most important thing you can do. We always tell each other what we've spent money on no matter how small the purchase so that we are both aware of where our account stands at any given time. Online checking also helps a ton because we are both able to check our balance on a daily basis.

3. We have separate accounts too. We have a monthly allowance that we give our personal accounts and we can spend that money as we choose, no questions asked. This also allows us to buy each other gifts without the other seeing the purchase come up in our joint account.

4. We use a super awesome spreadsheet that I created. A bunch of you have asked me for this in the past, so here it is!

Income vs. Money Spent

*At the top I keep track of our income. I get paid on the 15th and last day of every month...so that top row is where I enter my paychecks.
*Jason gets paid every Friday, so the second row is where I enter his paychecks (don't worry, we both get paid more than $1.00)
*The next row is where I add any additional income we make; whether its side jobs, gifts, or whatever.
*The green box is a formula to keep track of how much money we have earned for that particular month.
*Next I list all of our monthly bills. I put the budget in the first column (this is based on the average we spent for all of last year) and then once I pay the bill I enter the actual cost in to the second column.
*The next chunk is for Gas and Car Maintenance...since this varies pretty drastically from month-to-month, Ii don't set a budget for it...I just track it in the second column.
*The next section is for all things we typically spend our money each month. We have set budgets for each category and work hard to spend within that budget. And, yes, Champps has it's own budget....we eat there a lot.
*Next we have what I call the roll-over category. We have a budget set for these categories but because they aren't something we spend money on every month (the Kenley category does not include diapers...it's essentially extra stuff for her....like clothes or toys) the unspent amount will roll-over to the next month. So for example...let's say we spent $100 on gifts last year, our monthly average would be $8.33/month which would be this year's monthly budget. Then let's say we only spend $6.00 on gifts in January...the extra $2.33 would roll over to February making the gift budget $10.66 for that month. Got it?
*The last category is things we don't spend money on very often or get reimbursed for (like business expenses and fantasy sports...when Jason wins)
*Finally, we track our savings per month at the very bottom!

This system has been working great for us! But, I found that in order to be successful you need to check your bank account and enter in purchases at the very least a few times a week. When you're looking way back it makes it more difficult to account and budget. You also need to be avid debit card users like we are. We very rarely have cash on us and if we do it will be for something specific so that we can add it to our budget in the proper category.

It was pretty eye-opening to do this for a full year and see how much money we spent in each category. It definitely has helped us tighten up our finances and set a stricter budget for this year.

I know this isn't for everyone, but if this has worked for me, it may just work for you!
Give it a try and tell me what you think!
Or share with me what works for you! I'm always interested in getting new ideas to add to my system!

What I'm Loving Wednesday

Happy Hump Day people of the blog world, family and dear friends! I have been fighting a cold and I think it's winning, I'm feeling pretty crappy but Wednesday is my Thursday so I just need to power through two more work days! It's been a while since I've done one of these "what I'm loving" posts, so here ya go!

I am loving....

...Kenley's little voice. Miss K is becoming more and more vocal every day (we've got a talker, no surprise there). Her little squeaks and squeals are adorable and warm a mama's heart.

...Friday Night Lights. Man do I love this show. I'm almost through the second season and I am so happy I decided to finally watch it.

...Bobbi Brown Black Pearl Eye Shadow Palette. My brother got this for me for Christmas and I love it. I am a firm Smashbox supporter but I've been wearing the same earth-tone eye shadows for over a year, so it's nice to spice up my look with some cool-tones every now and then.

...that one week from today we'll be in Colorado! We're taking a long weekend and visiting my grandparents and cousins in Colorado! Can't wait!!!

...Blueberries & Cheese. So random, I know. But I've been packing some blueberries and reduced fat colby jack cheese for a snack every day and I LOVE the combo! Plus the protein in the cheese fills me up and keep me full for a while which is always appreciated.

....Psy pistachio commercial. I was majorly let down by the Super Bowl commercials this year...except for this one! I LOVE Psy (he cracks me up), so this commercials gets an LOL every time I see it.

... My Baby Sister. I mentioned on Monday that my sister's HS dance team didn't qualify for state this year and I know my lil Boodgie is majorly bummed and to top it off the ankle injury she's been dealing with all season has gotten worse. Poor thing is in a boot for a month and may need surgery. I know she needs some extra lovin' right now!

...The Husby, The Puggle & The Baby. No surprise there! But, I've gotta mention them because I love them more than anything in the world. These three goons are my whole world.

February Goals

Wow, the first month of 2013 has come and gone! Can't believe it. I set a couple of goals for myself in January, so let's take a look at how I did.

*Walk/Run 25 miles
I only went 15 miles this month. BOO! I'm still trying to figure out how to balance spending time with my peanut and working out. I know it will be WAY easier in the summer when I can take her for walks, but right now it's tough. Nonetheless, I need to get my booty-a-movin' if I want to hit my 400 mile goal for the year.

*Go to at least one yoga class.
I went to exactly one yoga class. I wish I would have gone to more, but again, still trying to figure out how to do it all.

*Lose 6 pounds.
I only lost 4 pounds this month, which I am proud of because it put me past that 20 pound mark. I was hoping the weight would come off a little faster than this, but you know what they say, 9 months up and 9 months down.

*Put SOMETHING into savings.
It was not a lot...like at all. BUT, the goal was to put SOMETHING, pretty much ANYTHING in to savings and we did that.

Now for my February goals:

*Go to Zumba with Kelly.
Everyone who has done it LOVES it and everyone who has done it who knows me tells me how much I would love it. For some reason, I have been too intimidated to try it, so this month, I am making myself go to a class to see what all the fuss is about! AND, if I'm going to try a new class, why not go with the master of fitness classes, Miss Kelly.

*Walk/Run 25 miles.
Since I barely knocked anything off my year goal of 400 miles, I need to make sure to chip away some more this month.

*Declutter/Organize Kenley's closet
Oh goodness, this poor closet is such a mess. Since Kenley has grown her way out of all her newborn outfits, I have been just throwing things around. I desperately need to pack away everything that is too small and organize everything that is fitting right now.

*Do a craft
I do have a particular craft in mind....I will show you if and when I get it done.

*Declutter/Organize Tupperware drawer
It's life's greatest mystery....why can't I find a lid for this tupperware?! We have a drawer dedicated to our tupperware and it's a heck of a hot mess right now...so this month I need to go through, match up the lids and bottoms and ditch anything that doesn't have a partner.

*Go completely yeast free for one week.
Ever since Steph wrote THIS POST and then Kristen started following a yeast free diet, I've been curious about it--I mean, Steph lost a total of 21 pounds and Kristen lost 4 pounds in one frickin' week. I KNOW that I have no interest in being entirely yeast free forever...cheese and pasta are pretty much my favorite foods and I don't want to give that up no matter how good I feel or how much weight I lose. With that being said...I want to challenge myself, maybe live partially yeast free (aka cut way back) AND if I happen to shed a few pounds, sweet! So I'm starting out with one week...entirely yeast free....Lord help me.

do you guys have any goals for this month?

Weekend Recap: Date, Dance, Babies & Beyonce

happy monday....not!
I thought not working on Fridays would make the weekends so much longer, but it doesn't, they still fly by in a flash.

It also doesn't help when your stupid cell phone decides not to charge and instead die overnight so your alarm doesn't go off. YUP! Woke up at 7:15 this morning....and hour and fifteen minutes later than I wanted to. While the extra sleep was nice, I got screwed out of my morning with Kenley causing me to leave the house in tears, great start to the week.

Anyways, today I'm linking up with Sami to share our weekend!

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

I've been a little mopey lately because I've been missing my husband. No, he hasn't gone anywhere and in fact we are probably together more now than we were before Kenley was born. But as it turns out, having a baby changes your relationship and causes you to work a little harder at it. Anyways, after feeling like we'd never have "us" time ever again, Jason planned a date night for us which was completely wonderful.
We went to Wildfire for dinner and they just so happened to have my FAVORITE white by the bottle! And then we saw Silver Linings Playbook which we both LOVED! One of the best movies I've seen in a long time and I think all four acting roles deserve the Oscar. After the movie we picked up our little pumpkin, went home and watched our wedding video...it FINALLY came and I have to say it was totally worth the wait. He did an incredible job of capturing every little detail! It was so much fun reliving our day and seeing things that neither of us had seen that day or things we had forgotten!

Saturday morning I woke up with quite the wine headache but had to power through for an early morning eye appointment, an eye appointment that has been about 4 years in the making. Immediately afterwards, I made a pit stop at Starbucks {gotta rack up those reward points} and was on my way to cheer on my sister and her HS dance team in the Section Finals. You may remember last year that they were runner-ups in the State Kick Competition (and my sister was only a Freshman!)
This year, sadly, they didn't qualify for state in either category, but they danced great and I couldn't be more proud of my baby sister!

Saturday afternoon we met up with some friends for a multi-baby play date. It was so fun seeing our buddies and having all of our kids together. It was really refreshing to spend some time with other parents, I am pretty much the first of my close girlfriends to have a baby and while I absolutely adore my friends, it was nice to be around people who get it and who are going through all the same things we are. We attempted to get all of the kids together for a group picture, but as you can imagine with kids ranging from age 2.5 months to 5 years-old, we had a pretty hard time. This is the ONLY picture I have of all 7 kids:
 Ha! We tried.
And, yes, my child is missing a sock...apparently she's going to be "that kid."

We got home at about 9pm on Saturday, and me and Kenley were POOPED! Playing with all those little kids sure takes it out of ya. We were both in bed and asleep by 9:30 and didn't wake up until 8:45 the next morning! MY BABY SLEPT FOR 11 STRAIGHT HOURS! Which means I slept for 11 straight hours! BLISS you guys! Total and complete bliss! Kenley has been a pretty great sleeper since day one, but this is just insane. And, she woke up just as happy as can be.

And of course, last night, we watched the Super Bowl. We went to our friends Colin & Sharisse's and met up with the beeb and her hubby Jake. It was a good game {thanks to the power outage} but all I really cared about was BEYONCE! Damn that woman! I been obsessed with B since the early DC days...I have all of their (and her) albums and have seen both DC and Beyonce in concert. She is SO talented, beyond gorgeous and down-to-earth. I just adore her and I think she totally rocked the halftime show!

Best half time since Britney & NSYNC! Am I right?

I hope you all had great weekends!
Off to power through another week of work.
