The Birth Hope

Oh hey friends!

I've been MIA the past few days thanks to a fever that attacked my baby girl late on Sunday night. Poor little thing just has not been herself and I can just see her tiny body working so hard to fight off whatever this is. Thankfully, yesterday afternoon the fever seemed to break and we appear to be on the tail end of whatever this is. Last night while my darling husband cared for our peanut, I was able to sneak away with my mama to visit the hospital where I'll deliver Ziggy for a tour of the birth center. Yes, I am delivering at the same place where I had Kenley, and while you'd think I'd be all "been there, done that" going to the hospital always has and always will be a cause for anxiety for me. Going to back and getting a refresher was something I felt would be really good for me and would help calm my nerves about embarking on this crazy journey for the second time.

Touring the hospital again ended up being a great decision. I was really surprised by how much has changed in the past 3.5 years. Not only have the rooms received a facelift but our hospital has taken some great strides towards being more mama friendly. Don't get me wrong, we had a great experience with Kenley but I definitely didn't feel confident in voicing my needs and wants for my birth. During the tour they mentioned bringing a birth plan several times, they mentioned immediate skin-to-skin and delayed cord clamping, as well as adding hydrotherapy pools to 5 of the labor rooms {not for a water birth but for laboring}! All of these things were music to my ears and made me feel so much better about having an idea of what I want for this birth and feeling more comfortable about making those wants known without feeling high maintenance or judged.

Before I get in to what those wants are, I feel I need a little disclaimer...I am sharing this personal part of my pregnancy with all of you in hopes that it will help others, even if just one woman {or man} learns something or feels this is helpful then it's worth sharing. I do not post this to start arguments or debates or to get people worked up about their particular birth beliefs and even though it seems that unsolicited advice and opinions are an unavoidable part of pregnancy {annoying}, I just want to say that you can agree or disagree with my plans/ideas and that's
OK but if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. Us mamas need support and encouragement and nothing else. Except maybe brownies. Lots of brownies.

So anyways...

When it comes to childbirth you can plan and plan until you are blue in the face and with the help of a baby daddy/birth partner/doula/midwife/doctor a lot of women are able to execute that plan pretty well. However, no matter the plan there are always elements of childbirth that just cannot be pre-planned. It is for this reason I have changed the name of my Birth Plan to my Birth Hope. I'm no dummy, I've been through this before and I know that there are some things that are absolutely in my control and some things that are just not.
Lol!:
I will start by saying that I am a big advocate for natural childbirth. Sounds silly coming from someone who had an epidural the first time, right? I'm not against pain interventions and I'm not against C-sections. I'm not against doctors or hospitals or any of those other things that some passionately feel strongly against. I believe a mom's health and a baby's health are absolutely the priority and whatever needs to be done to get a baby safely into the world is cool with me. I just also believe that every woman is capable of having a natural birth {it's what our bodies were made to do} and whether or not she does is a matter of choice {and some circumstance}. I was not able to do it naturally. I wanted to. It was the plan. But when it came down to it, it just hurt too bad and I was not mentally strong enough or prepared enough to get myself through it. And I'm 100% ok with that. I don't regret it, I don't have sad or disappointed feelings about my birth...I got my baby here and we were both healthy and safe and that at the end of the day was my only goal.

Beyond the ultimate goal of a healthy mom and baby, I do have hopes for my next birth. Hopes that have come from what I know and learned from my first birth as well as the books I've read, movies I've watched and birth stories I've heard. So with that, here are my Birth Hopes for Round 2.

1. Avoid a c-section at all costs. Like I mentioned, this isn't because I think they are bad or have any kind of judgement on people who have had them, it is simply because it scares the living crap out of me. Although routine, a c-section is a major surgery and being cut open and then recovering with a newborn and a 3 year old is just not something I want to do unless I have to. If there comes a situation in which it is ABSOLUTELY medically necessary for me to have surgery for the health and well being of my baby, of course I will do it. Of course I will. But, I will only cross that bridge if that time comes. Until then, my plan and my hope is to be educated on any other options I may have.

2. Labor at home for as long as possible. If you haven't picked up on this yet, I hate hospitals. Up until a few years ago, I couldn't walk into one without throwing up. I hate knowing there are people in pain and people dying within those walls. It physically hurts me, makes me anxious and is what causes the vomiting. Silly, I know, but it's just one of my many quirks. If I didn't love my doctor and her practice so much and want the security of the hospital's equipment if necessary, I would be all about a birth center. I mentioned awhile back that I read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and there was a part that stood out to me, "...I learned by observation and experience that the presence of even one person who is not exquisitely attuned to the mother's feelings can stop some women's labors..." This was so true for me with Kenley. The second I walked into the hospital everything hurt way worse and seemed way worse and I wasn't progressing at all. That anxiety I feel at the hospital mixed with people who didn't understand how I felt or what I wanted absolutely affected my progress. For this reason, I want to be at home where I am comfortable for as long as humanly possible. The hospital is only 5 minutes away and I don't want to go until my contractions are on top of each other and I'm screaming bloody murder.

3. Remain mobile for as long as possible. With Kenley, being tied down to the bed with the fetal monitor was just about the worst thing I'd experienced. I had terrible back labor and laying on my back felt as though I was being tortured. I want to allow gravity to do it's thing, I want to be able to do what I need to do to handle contractions the best I can and I know for me that is not being attached to a bed. I am excited to have the option of a hydrotherapy pool. With both pregnancies being in the water has been so calming for me, whether it's the bath, a swimming pool or even just in the shower something about water relaxes me so much.

4. Try my stinkin' hardest to put off the epidural for as long as possible. With Kenley, I got the epidural at 5cm dilated after 13 hours of labor. With 5cm to go and the typical slowing that occurs with an epidural, I needed pitocin which lead to Kenley's heart rate dropping {as it very often does} and I found myself right on the verge of a C-section. This time I have a goal in my head that I want to make it to at least 7cm before asking for the juice. I realize I run the risk of it being too late, and truthfully I'm OK with that. If I am forced to have a natural birth, well, then I have it. Plus, waiting on the epidural will help me with hope #2 since as soon as I get the epidural, I'll be on my back in bed.

5. NO episiotomy! I had an episiotomy with Kenley and it lead to a really painful recovery. I had to sit on a donut for days and wasn't right down below for months. I also recently learned that Jason saw my doctor cut me and it's left a permanent scar on his brain {sorry babe}. I know that tearing is likely and probably inevitable but this time I'd like for it to just happen naturally. I feel like if it happens how my body needs it to it will heal as it's supposed to. I'm sure it's no fun either way, but I feel pretty strongly about this one this time.

6. Immediate skin-to-skin. I was passionate about this with Kenley and in the whirlwind of having just given birth didn't advocate for myself. They did her measurements and gave her the vitamin k and eye drops before I got to hold her and while it was just fine and we clearly had no problems bonding, I just didn't love it. I want to hold my baby the second he comes out, I've waited long enough to see him and hold him! I was so happy to hear that my hospital now has that as standard procedure. They give mama a chance to do skin-to-skin and nurse along with delayed cord clamping before taking measurements! Yay!

It's truly crazy to think about going through all of this again. I was so anxious and nervous with Kenley because I didn't know what to expect. This time. I'm actually kind of excited! It's of course unnerving and a little stressful not knowing what will happen or how it will happen or when it will happen and no amount of birth experience can change that, but, I cannot wait to meet my baby and am looking forward to getting the ball rolling! I know it will hurt and be hard and I'm sure I'll grow more and more nervous as the big draws near but I feel more prepared now and feel that my support system and delivery team are on my side with my wishes.

{bump two} 32 & 33 weeks

Mom :: +30lbs // Baby :: appx. 17inches & 4lb {a pineapple!}
Baby's bones are hardening and he is losing that alien look and looking more like a newborn!
49 days til Due Date!

So I totally dropped the ball on a 32 week update and today I am officially 33 weeks, so a joint update is happening today.

The past two weeks have been filled with a rollercoaster of highs and lows, not just with me and baby but with friends and family as well. Needless to say, my emotions were EVERYWHERE. It's hard enough dealing with everyday life and a whirlwind of hormones but throw in some extra life stuff and it turns a preggo into a serious hot mess. Not all bad, there were some great things too! But I was just everywhere.

I have been able to get a lot of little baby related things done and checked off the list which feels really good. It wasn't anything major but those teeny things really add up, as I shared on Tuesday with my baby to do list. It's getting short!!! I'm anxious for my Sprinkle this weekend because I feel like after that it's no holds bar on baby prep and I can really get myself ready!

We had our 32 week appointment on the 2nd and got to see Ziggy on an ultrasound. I always get so excited and so nervous to have an ultrasound. We were happy to see that Ziggy is still growing strong and this cord issue seems to be a non-issue, although I will say it's a little unsettling to hear that baby is already measuring 5 lbs with 2 months left to go. At the average rate of growth that puts him at around 9lbs at my due date. Of course this is just an estimate and we have no way of knowing when he'll arrive or if he'll continue to grow at this rate but I'm praying for a big healthy baby that isn't too big to push out!

In addition to his sheer size, Ziggy is also breech. Hearing the "B" word is something I've been dreading and fearing from the start. A C-Section is something that I really, really, really want to avoid - not because I think they are bad, I know they are routine and know tons of friends who have had them - but because I am terrified of surgery. I'm a wimp. And for me, getting cut open is about as scary as it gets. So, while I still have some time I am trying to be proactive and do what I can to try and get this guy into the head down position. I've been implementing some of the tips on spinningbabies.com and have started weekly appointments with my chiropractor who is certified in the Webster Technique. I will see my doctor again at 34 weeks and will have another ultrasound at 36 weeks. If Ziggy is still breech at 36 weeks we will look into having a version done. And if after all of that this guy is still being a stinker, we will likely have to schedule a C word for 39 weeks.

And if the size and position weren't enough, this little big boy would not show his face. He just refused to turn towards the wand thing and as a result this was the single photo we got of our son at 32 weeks.
Lord help me with this one, he is going to keep us on our toes!

I have also been experiencing quite a bit of labor-like symptoms. I've been super nauseas, haven't had an appetite, cramping, stomach tightening, etc. The cramping and tightening is super random and irregular and not really painful just uncomfortable. I talked to one of the nurses this week because I was getting a little concerned but she calmed my nerves and suggested just laying down for an hour or so when this happens and timing/tracking the tummy tightening as well as baby movements. At this point, it's nothing more than just late pregnancy uncomfortableness.

My next appointment is coming up on the 21st, we won't have an ultrasound but I am anxious to get myself and this little guy checked out because time is really ticking at this point!

T minus 7ish weeks!

Maternity Photos!

Once again my friend Sara Jayne knocks it out of the park. I can't thank SJ enough for capturing my family as we grow, every session we have means even more than the last. It's so wonderful to show up and be completely ourselves. We never have to stress about being awkward or feeling uncomfortable. SJ knows us so well and we can just be our usual selves around her and that on top of her amazing talent to perfectly capture life's moments is why I love our photos so very much. Even when I'm not feeling so hot, Sara makes me feel beautiful and am I so grateful to have these photos to remember what life was like just before our little man joined our family.

Saint and Sailor Studios | A Giveaway

When thinking about a nursery for my baby boy, there wasn't a question in my mind that it would be sports related. You all know what a sport-loving team-supporting household we are so there really wasn't much else that made sense in terms of a theme. I did know, however, that I didn't want the room to be over the top themey. I wanted it to be cute and calm and unique and not necessarily the classic "sports theme" that I've seen so many times. As the decorating and planning has progressed, a style for this room has really evolved so I am BEYOND excited to be teaming up with Saint and Sailor Studios to not only give you a little sneak peek of Ziggy boy's room but also give you a chance to win a set of canvases for yourself.
Shawn, the artist behind all these incredible prints has a fantastic collection of artwork to chose from and not just related to sports, but so much more. I really love his work and his style and it's actually a little embarrassing how much time I spent looking through all of his pieces in an attempt to choose some for Ziggy's room. After much perusing, I decided on a set of 4 vintage sports prints for my little guy's room.
I was so excited about these and once they arrived I was blown away. The print quality is incredible and the colors are perfection. I very honestly can't say enough about how happy I am with these prints. They look so great in the room and are something that can grow with Ziggy as he gets older.

Shawn offers a variety of prints, canvases and home decor in a varying sizes in his Etsy shop and sells pre-collated sets as well. There's really something for everybody. I thought I had Kenley's room all decorated but now I have my eye on those ballet slippers and am scheming a spot where I can hang it.
Shawn has very generously offered to give one of my lucky readers their very own set of four 11x14 canvas prints!!! Can you say heck yeah? Enter below and I will announce the very lucky winner on Monday! GOOD LUCK!

Baby To Do {2 months to go}

I cannot believe we are already a week in to March and our baby is due to arrive sometime in the next two months! The past few weeks I've been feeling painfully behind on baby stuff but thankfully I was able to knock a couple of things off this past week. I love seeing this baby to do list is get shorter and  shorter and I am starting to feel more  ready for this baby to join our family (despite feeling wildly unorganized right now) if there is such a thing as feeling ready, because really who am I kidding?

DONE!
Find Sprinkle outfits - my goodness was this an ordeal. I cannot even tell you how many dresses I tried on, bought and returned. I don't know why this was so stinkin' hard for me, but I am really happy and excited about what I found for both my sprinkles and am also super glad maternity dress shopping is now OVER.

Hostess gifts for Sprinkle hosts - I had a lot of fun shopping for these! I got each of the girls something different and unique to them and am really excited about both gifts. It means so much that they are spending their precious time and hard earned money to celebrate me and Ziggy and I just wish I could give them more!

Put together a Big Sister gift for Kenley - I am SO EXCITED about this! All of the stuff for her bag is purchased and now in my possession! I still need to wrap everything up and put it together but it's almost done! It's so hard for me to keep this hidden and a secret, I know she's going to love every bit of it and I just want to give it to her now! Post all about it coming up eventually.

Talk to Sara Jayne about maternity, hospital & newborn shoots - We have our general game plans for all of our shoots nailed down, of course a lot of the details will depend on when Big Zig decides to debut but I have my ideas and outfits and everything squared away - just have to have a baby to photograph and we're good.

Find outfits and plan details for maternity shoot - done and done! It wasn't much planning outfits as it was just buying like 10 things and then returning what I didn't use.

✔ Develop birth plan - Despite knowing that the details of giving birth are relatively out of my hands, I do have some things that are really important to me this time around. I'll be sharing my hopes for this birth some time soon.

✔ 28 week prenatal visit - We got to see our little man and learned that he as healthy as can be and is growing better than we had expected. As of this appointment he was measuring 3 weeks big!

✔ Go on babymoon! Best 5 days EVER. I can't say it enough, a little family getaway was so necessary and so fun and the best possible way to celebrate our days as a family of three coming to an end.

✔ 32 week prenatal visit - I still need to recap week 32 {I'll get to that eventually} but we had our appointment last week and let's just say that this Ziggy Boy is a pill.

✔ Take maternity photos - We took our photos with Sara over the weekend and I am so excited to see them and share them with you! It was such a fun morning and we got some really great ones. I'm so grateful that Kenley cooperated and had fun with it and I know I'll treasure these photos forever.

✔ Make hospital packing list and pick up anything we need  - the list has been made and all miscellaneous items have been purchased, now I just need to get them packed up!

✔ Build phone tree for baby announcement - I have a note on my phone with the list of people we need to notify as soon as Ziggy has made his grand entrance! I would hate to forget anyone important which is a definite possibility after you've just given birth and are soaking up those first minutes, so good to be prepared ahead of time.

✔ Design birth announcements and address/stamp envelopes - I am thrilled to be teaming up with Minted.com on Ziggy's Birth Announcement! They have so many fantastic designs and their quality is top notch! Beyond that, they make a mama-to-be's life SO EASY by offering a "pay now design later" option. Once I knew which announcements I wanted, I ordered them! Once baby is born I'll just throw in his stats and a couple of photos and then send those bad boys to print! It's so nice having that done and taken care of ahead of time as I know I will be knee deep in nursing and spit up and poop when it comes time to get these sent. Minted also offers recipient and return address printing on their envelopes which is another life saver for a new mom. I already have all of our addresses uploaded in there, so when they go to print and then arrive at the door all I'll have to do is stuff, seal and stamp! Otherwise, let's be honest, it'd probably take me MONTHS to get all of that done with a newborn and toddler. I'm keeping the design we chose under wraps until I send them out, but here are a couple of the runner ups! So many cute designs, it was really hard to pick!
 Darling Photo Grid Birth Announcements

IN PROGRESS
Reach goal of walking/running/biking 400 miles - Well this goal is pretty much shot. I've only gone 114.35 miles so far and with less than 2 months until my due date I highly doubt I'll be able to go 285 more (that'd be more than 5 miles/day!) It amazes me how much I was able to walk when I was pregnant with Kenley, I just have not been able to muster that much this time around.

Celebrate baby at Sprinkle! - My first sprinkle was a little over a week ago and was so wonderful! My second is this Sunday!!!!

Send Sprinkle thank you notes - The thank you notes for my first sprinkle have been sent and I'll get the rest done once we're done partying on Sunday.

Unpack and wash baby gear, pump and bottles - All of Kenley's old baby gear has been unpacked and I've washed the pieces I am able. Now I just need to get everything assembled {like the Rock N Play, Bouncer and Play Hopping thingy - what are those called?} I figure I will wash bottles and get those all organized soon.

Finalize outfits & ideas for newborn shoot - I have a couple different "looks" for Ziggy all planned out and cannot wait for Sara to work her magic on our little boy. I have decided not to plan outfits out for the rest of us and instead just wear what fits and works when the time comes. I mean really, no one will be looking at us when there's an adorable baby in the photo anyways. So really all that's left to do is pick up a couple things that we will need for the shoot.

Work on the nursery - We are waiting on a new crib to arrive - drama. But once that is assembled all that's left to do is decorate! I have a ton of stuff just waiting to find a perfect spot in the room and I can't wait to get it all placed. I'm holding off until I have absolutely everything I need and my sprinkles are done to start putting holes in the walls, despite totally chomping at the bit.

PAST DUE
Attend a TC Bump Club Workout - So mad at myself for not attending a single one of these. I just can't seem to make the timing work! Bummer.

Schedule some prenatal yoga classes - Again, mad at myself. I think a little prenatal yoga would be really good for me in these final months, so I'm not giving up hope on this one yet.
